AMD 1- Dean Chenensky
For my AMD I watched the film "Inglorious Basterds" by Quentin Tarantino. The film, though not German itself, did provide multiple scenes in which dialogue came in German. Pairing the German dialogue with the english subtitles was entertaining, and it was great to finally recognize some of the vocabulary that we reviewed in Kapitel 1. In addition the movie taught me an interesting piece of German culture. In America, when expressing numbers with our hands, we tend to hold up every finger but our thumbs before we need to express five. In Germany however they show count on their hands starting with the thumb and adding fingers closest to the thumb. Thus for Zwei you would hold up your thumb and index figure in Germany and your index and middle finger in America.

AMD 1 - Robert Iafrato
I spoke to my roommate in (some) German for just less than an hour. His mutter kommt aus Deutschland. He also lived there for several short periods of time. We initially spoke of the food in Germany. German food is cooked with an attention to ingredients. Desserts are typically less sweet than American desserts. We then spoke about many Germans' perceptions of Americans. To my surprise, it was not entirely negative. He told me that many Deutschen have a great deal of respect for the United States. He has been all over Germany, but has spent the most time in Augsburg, near Munich.

Willkommen!!
Welcome to our class blog!
We will be using this blog throughout the semester for two kinds of assignments:
1. Once per chapter, the homework plan will direct you to post a response to the culture readings for the chapter on the blog.
2. Roughly every other week, the homework plan will direct you to post here for your Abenteuer mit Deutsch (AMD) assignment. First you do a fun activity that involves German, then you post about it. You should spend an hour total on this (maybe 45-55 minutes doing something, 5-15 minutes posting about it). See Was ist ein AMD, AMD Ideen and Beispiele for ideas. This should get you excited about the kinds of things you can do!
Whenever you post something, please include your name and the name of the assignment (e.g. AMD2, Kultur5) as labels. See "Blog: How To" for more details!
